Automobile Inspection and Diagnosis
Evaluation of Wheel Alignment - Wheel Convergence of the Automobile
Wheel alignment and convergence - a familiar and a mysterious procedure. Every mechanic does the inspection, but not every mechanic knows why he is doing the inspection. Such phrases as, "the car pulls to the side", "the car doesn't respond well to the wheel", "the car drifts", "the car eats rubber" have often been heard by most mechanics, and not only heard, but also experienced. The problem is that every wheel in a modern automobile "lives its own life". Each wheel has its own independent connection/suspension to the body of the automobile. With this system, the automobile is able to move without any problems under one condition: when all four wheels will work as if part of one team, precisely preserving their own "geometry" with respect to one another and with respect to the body of the automobile. This is achieved with the regulation of wheel alignment and convergence, which means, basically, the adjustment of the necessary angles of tilt and inclination of the wheel to the various shafts of the automobile. There are three such inclinations for the front wheels, while the back wheels have two. If one considers that the automobile must be controlled with the simultaneous regulation of all the inclinations, the modern system that regulates the automobile's wheel alignment and convergence must be (and, indeed, is)
computerized.
Any stand evaluating the "wheel alignment and convergence" is made up of measuring "heads", which are simultaneously placed on the discs of all the automobile's wheels, as well as a central stand which is connected to a personal computer. The link between the sensor "heads" and the personal computer in the various stands that exist is carried out with the help of cables, radio channels and
beams.
The results of the measurements from the sensors are received by the personal computer of the central stand, where they are processed and compared to the required measurement values from the personal computer's database for the automobile in question. The computer's database contains thousands of automobile models' required
norms.
The RALEX Autoservice garage uses the best wheel alignment and convergence diagnostics system in the world, manufactured by the Beissbarth
company.
All Beissbarth equipment is made according to the latest developments in science and technology. Along with a new family of stands, Microline, for the measurement of the geometrics of the automobile's running parts, it represents, in fact, a new technical standard, recognized by the majority of the world's leading automobile
manufacturers.
With respect to several parameters - Baissbarth is the leader. In part, the stands for the measurement of the angle of wheel alignment and conversion are the "native" position of the company. Here, the company has no equals. One is impressed, not only by the quality, but also by the quantity of the models offered by the Baissbarth
manufacturer.
The diagnostic stand, with the computerized system of processing and mapping of the measured results controls the placement parameters of the wheel shaft of any type of automobile with a rim diameter of 10 to 18 inches. The system
analyses:
- the angle of wheel alignment of the front left and right
wheels,
- the difference in the angles of wheel alignment of the front
wheels,
- the angle convergence of the front left and right wheels,
- the total convergence of the front and rear wheels,
- the angle of longitudinal shaft tilt of the rotational displacement of the front controlled left and right
wheels,
- the difference in longitudinal shaft tilt of the rotational displacement of the turning
wheels,
- the angle of transverse shaft tilt of the rotational displacement of the front controlled left and right
wheels,
- the difference in transverse shaft tilt of the rotational displacement of the turning
wheels,
- the angle of alignment of the front left and right wheels,
- the angles of alignment of the rear wheels,
- the angle of convergence of the front left and right wheels,
- the maximal angle of rotational displacement of the left and right turning
wheels,
- the ratio of angles of rotational displacement of the turning
wheels,
- the displacement of the front
bridge,
- the displacement of the rear bridge (angle of motion).
Guidance of the whole process is performed with the help of a remote control or the keyboard of a personal computer, with the simultaneous display of the information on the computer's screen. The measured parameters are automatically checked with accepted norms stored in the computer's database. The program also allows the information and the parameters measured, before and after adjustment, to be saved and
printed.
